For years, this highly public love affair of French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and British actress Jane Birkin captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. The moment Jane and Serge met on a movie set in 1968, sparks flew. They would end up spending the next 12 years together in a passionate union that Birkin's older brother Andrew, an avid photographer, often witnessed up close and personal. Whenever possible, Andrew often trained his camera on this incredibly public couple and their children.
A new book, Jane and Serge, A Family Album ($60, taschen.com), brings together a selection of those very personal and intimate photos, worlds away from the couple's more public image, with Sunday lunches and family moments all committed to film. Designed by graphics duo M/M, the volume looks back at a magical decade with a marked lack of nostalgia, bringing back to life these pictures of stolen moments, in all their emotion.
We'd love to see this in our Christmas stocking.
